Beverley MacDonald was born and raised in Victoria. Her paternal grandfather was an ANZAC at Gallipoli and France; her father was a primary school teacher in regional Victoria. After the publication of her first novel she went back to school and completed a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing. She is a qualified editor and currently works in children's television.
