Biography & Memoir | May 2021 New releases

The book documents every decade of Marigold, Lady Southey's life from her birth in California, her childhood in the family home, Cranlana, in Melbourne, the tragic death of her father, Sidney Myer, travels with her mother, (Dame) Merlyn, in America and Europe and then her courtship and marriage to Ross Shelmerdine.

From 1950, Marigold's life with Ross was marked by a whirlwind of entrepreneurial ventures spanning hospitality (including the restaurant's Nino's Stromboli, and Eliza's and the John Batman Motor Inn), tourism, winemaking (including the establishment of Mitchelton), cattle breeding (at Merindoc), conservation and raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundations while planting thousands of trees and raising their four children.

Marigold and Ross achieved more in three decades than most manage in a lifetime. Their perfect partnership came to an abrupt halt with Ross's sudden death in 1979. Marigold's life took a very different course when she married Sir Robert Southey in 1982 and became engrossed in the world of ballet and music, which involved extensive travel and a greater involvement in philanthropy.

Marigold was widowed once more in 1998, and her life became busier still as she served as president of the Myer Foundation and Philanthropy Australia and at the same time took on a vice regal appointment, serving as Victoria's Lieutenant-Governor. When her term came to an end she did not slow down, taking on new patronages in the arts, animal welfare and health.

Despite her myriad achievements, the enduring thread throughout Marigold's story is that of family. While Marigold - Lady Southey, AC - is renowned for her tireless work for others and can carry herself in the grandest of situations, she is most at peace when walking her beloved dogs, tending to her property at Tooborac and spending time with her extended family.
