Miro: Theatre of Dreams

Author(s): Roland Penrose

Art

The Spanish painter Joan Miro (1893-1983) is one of the major figures of 20th-century art. He belonged to a generation of artists active in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, and became associated with the Surrealist movement. Miro's imagery derives from his personal world of dreams, fantasy and magic. In this video, filmed only a few years before his death and directed by Robin Lough, Miro discusses his creative process with the painter and critic Ronald Penrose. Commenting on key works from throughout his career, Miro provides explanations of images, that are often perceived as difficult to interpret, while pointing out the diverse influences on his vision.
